Written by the Tony Award-winning team of Maury Yeston (music and lyrics) and Arthur Kopit (book), and based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel “The Phantom of the Opera”, the romantic musical takes a fresh look at the mysterious young phantom, Erik, who lives in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and shares glorious music with the enchanting vocal prodigy, Christine. Not to be confused with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 mega-musical, the Yeston and Kopit version, more operetta-like in musical style, seeks to more closely reflect the Leroux novel and offers a deeper exploration of the phantom’s past.
Downtown Cabaret Theatre had the thrill and honor of hosting Maury Yeston, the composer of Phantom at the 6 pm performance Sunday, November 19, 2017. Mr. Yeston who has seen his show Phantom around the world had many, many complimentary things to say about the production, including that it was one of the ten best productions he had attended.

“This Phantom is not Sir Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, AND THAT’S GREAT. Yeston’s Phantom is smaller, but in my opinion, better. It has a heart and they delve into the characters in a warmer, more human way.”
