Had you read or seen the play before this production and if so can you share your first experience/reaction after reading/seeing the play?

I had never read or seen the play before, but I loved my first experience with the cast. The show is really interesting, and I love its plot of a family finding its way through its troubles.

Why did you become interested in this production?

I have worked with the Downtown Cabaret before, and it’s always a fun experience. This is the first play I have ever done, and I know it will be a fun experience since I’ve auditioned.

This show takes on the themes of racial intolerance, the discovery of one’s culture and sacrificing for family – all themes that are still relevant in today’s world. How are you preparing to tackle these themes and what message do you want to portray to audiences?

The message I want to portray is the message of hope.Throughout all of the family, they want Travis to have a better life. Walter is relying on Travis to be a better man than he is, and telling him that he is going to pass his leadership or role in the family to him.

Had you read or seen the play before this production and if so can you share your first experience/reaction after reading/seeing the play?

I had not ever heard of the play before I heard about the auditions, but after reading some of the characters’ analysis and book analysis, I began to fall in love with it. Not only did I fall in love with the story, but also the poem by Langston Hughes.

Why did you become interested in this production?

Well, I became interested in the production after one of my actor friends told me about the auditions and the show. I went to the website to look at the characters, and once I had seen Travis’s description I thought, “ Wow, I honestly have so many connections to him!!”

Do you share any similarities with the character you are portraying?

I share a lot of similarities with my character, such as always wanting to work, and always wanting the best for my family. I also share the connection that he has with his family with mine, because he will deal with anything just as long as it’s with his family.

This show takes on the themes of racial intolerance, the discovery of one’s culture and sacrificing for family – all themes that are still relevant in today’s world. How are you preparing to tackle these themes and what message do you want to portray to audiences?

Well, I plan on doing a little research on the 1950’s and what African Americans struggled with at the time. I want to do this so that I can portray my character as much as possible and make him a dynamic character in the story.
